At Worlingworth Primary we believe that learning and applying the English skills of reading, writing and discussion is the right of every child and the very foundation of children’s learning, upon which they can quickly build a strong fortress of knowledge and understanding from our whole curriculum. In order to achieve this foundation, our English Curriculum is threaded through all that we do and this golden thread ignites our children’s curiosity and creativity and provides opportunities to communicate and challenge their thinking.  We believe that a quality English curriculum should develop children’s passion for words and reading, enjoyment with writing and confidence when speaking. We aim to inspire an appreciation of our rich and varied literary heritage and a habit of reading widely and often - strengthening their imaginations and broadening their horizons. We value the importance of nurturing a culture where all children take pride in their writing, can write clearly and accurately and adapt their language and style for a range of contexts. We want to inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening and who can use discussion and shared performance to express and further their learning.
Our English Curriculum, which follows a clear pathway of progression, enables children to develop a secure knowledge-base in English as they advance through primary school. We aim to deliver a high-quality English education that allows our children to succeed in the next stages of their education and to participate fully in society.

Reading

Reading Intent

At Worlingworth Primary School we take great care to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, with confidence, curiosity and passion, in any subject. We aim to achieve this by :

  • establishing an environment where learning to read is a priority from a pupil’s first day at school
  • promoting the importance of becoming a reader as the foundation for successful learning
  • setting out access to high quality texts in a range of genres and subjects
  • guaranteeing reading for pleasure is at the forefront of all we do
  • ensuring pupils use their comprehension skills to access and acquire knowledge across the curriculum
  • working closely with parents and carers to support them in helping their child at home to become a confident reader

Early reading skills are embedded through the use of high-quality systemic phonics teaching (Read, Write Inc) as well as carefully planned discussions around engaging books and their features.  Sharing stories, information texts and poetry with the whole class or small groups is also used widely to develop a love for reading alongside use of role-play, our reading books, Book Buzz class area and daily reading sessions.  Reading Cafes support developing parents’ knowledge and understanding of phonics and how to read with their child at home. Reading books are carefully chosen to support phonic progression along with choices from Book Buzz areas for sharing and enjoying.

At Worlingworth Primary School, all pupils and staff are encouraged to read for pleasure. The promotion of a love for reading across the school is developed through Book Buzz areas in classrooms, daily class story-time, pop-up Book Fairs, regular reading events such as our whole school Book Week, buddy reading, cosy reading, author visits, theatre trips to see stories performed live, book swaps and whole school reading challenges as well as promoting the importance and pleasure of shared reading at home with links to libraries.
